Zug
No Obligation
The canton of Zug has no cantonal dog act and no training obligation. The federal Animal Protection Ordinance (AniPO) applies directly to all dog owners in the canton. In addition, the 11 Zug municipalities can enact their own dog regulations, setting leash requirements, dog bans and tax rates. The canton of Zug has neither a course obligation nor a permit requirement for certain breeds.

Federal law directly applicable — and 11 municipalities with their own rules
Since the canton of Zug has not enacted a cantonal dog act, the federal Animal Protection Ordinance (AniPO; SR 455.1) applies directly. It regulates keeping conditions, social contact, exercise, the proof of competence (SKN) and the obligation to keep dogs in a way that they do not endanger people and animals (Art. 77 AniPO). The competent cantonal authority is the Veterinary Service Zug (Office for Consumer Protection, Health Directorate) in Steinhausen. The 11 political municipalities can establish additional rules in their own dog regulations — leash requirements, access bans, dog tax.
📋 Municipal regulations — where do I find the rules for my municipality?
The Zug Veterinary Service provides an "Information sheet on dog regulations" (as of January 2026) with direct links to the regulations of all 11 municipalities: Baar, Cham, Hünenberg, Menzingen, Neuheim, Oberägeri, Risch, Steinhausen, Unterägeri, Walchwil and the city of Zug. The municipalities set in particular dog tax amounts, additional leash obligation zones and dog prohibition zones.
